Course Description:
The purpose of this program is to review important aspects of pharmacology and internal medicine, including the appropriate use of analgesics, antibiotics, local anesthesia and agents to control anxiety, drug (medication) knowledge and interactions, prescription writing, abuse of prescriptions by patients, taking complete medical histories, and the use of the New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program (NJPMP)
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the medications commonly administered and prescribed in dental practice and their appropriate use
- Conduct a history and physical exam appropriate for a dental setting and describe its use in risk stratification and treatment planning
- Identify management strategies for post-operative analgesia that limit or eliminate a reliance on opioids; effectively utilize the NJPMP when indicated, as part of a competent prescription writing protocol
Speaker Bio:
Hilly Ephros is a graduate of both the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (DMD, 1980) and St. George’s University School of Medicine (MD, 1992). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and served as a board examiner from 2004-2009 He is the OMS program director and chair of the Department of Dentistry/OMS at St. Joseph’s Health where he is also Medical Director of the Regional Craniofacial Center.
