Ethical and Legal Pearls for Proper Treatment Planning and Collecting Fees

  • Tue, May 17, 2022 | 1:00 PM - Tue, May 17, 2022 | 2:00 PM
  • Location: Virtual Meeting

Course Description:
This lecture will discuss the various ethical, business and legal issues dentists should be aware of when presenting treatment plans and collecting patient fees. State Board regulations require that before treatment, a dentist must make a diagnosis and treatment plan, and communicate to the patient the material risks and clinically acceptable alternatives and costs relative to treatment that is rendered. The lecture will explain techniques to comply with this regulation and also why compliance with this regulation is  beneficial to both the patient and dentist. Many lawsuits, State Board complaints and negative online reviews arise from misunderstandings regarding treatment plans and collection of treatment fees. This lecture will provide information for proper patient communication which should not only provide dentists with legal protections, but also increase case acceptance and collections. Recordkeeping, informed consent forms, staff training and patient financing will be highlighted.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the State Board regulation on treatment plans, informed consent and patient fees.
  2. Understand the negative ethical, legal and business ramifications of failing to comply with the regulation
  3. Recognize the practical benefits of compliance with the regulation
  4. Learn steps for implementing a comprehensive treatment planning and collection policy for your office.
  5. Discuss why 3rd party financing can be a win-win for your practice and patients.
  6. Review necessary forms and records.
