Course Description:

This presentation reviews the mechanism of action, signs, and symptoms of opioid drugs, including the most commonly prescribed opioid medications by dentists.  Statistics of the opioid epidemic will be reviewed.  There will also be an overview of current prescribing guidelines and recommendations, with a focus on New Jersey's 5-day rule and conversions of the morphine milligram equivalent (MME).  Treatment for overdose and withdrawal symptoms, as well as comorbid conditions, will be discussed as part of the substance use disorder.

Learning Objectives:

1. To gain knowledge about the current opioid epidemic.

2. To learn about the mechanism of actions, signs, and symptoms of opioid use, and common opioid prescriptions.

3. To familiarize oneself with treatment for opioid withdrawal symptoms and overdose, as well as prevention.
