Renewal Process for GA & PCS Permit Holders: Inspections
We’ve received a number of questions about whether dentists renewing their General Anesthesia (GA) or Parenteral Conscious Sedation (PCS) permits are automatically required to undergo a new office inspection. Below is clarification based on guidance from the State Board of Dentistry and its designated inspection agents.
Inspection Cycles
- General Anesthesia (GA):
- Fixed Office Inspections: Valid for five years from the date of inspection
- Mobile GA Inspections: Valid for three years from the date of inspection.
- Parenteral Conscious Sedation (PCS):
- Fixed Office Inspections: Valid for five years from the date of inspection.
- Mobile PCS Inspections: Valid for three years from the date of inspection.
Example: If the office where you have your GA or PCS permit assigned was inspected in April 2024, the inspection remains valid until April 2029. If you operate under a mobile GA or PCS permit and your unit was inspected in April 2024, that inspection is valid until April 2027.
Important to Remember
- Renewal of your GA or PCS permit does not trigger a new inspection unless you have reached the end of your inspection cycle (five years for GA/PCS offices, three years for mobile PCS).
- The Board maintains inspection reports on file for each office and provider. While uploading a copy at renewal may be helpful, it is not required.
Inspection Agents
The State Board’s appointed agents for GA and PCS inspections are coordinated through the Anesthesia Committee of the New Jersey Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (NJSOMS).

- Dawn Amodio – Executive Secretary/Coordinator (preferred contact by email)
