Let's meet another outstanding member of the 2025 class of NJDA Member Recognition Award Recipients. The next member-dentist we’re spotlighting is Dr. Sonia Chugh from Union County Dental Society.

Dr. Sonia Chugh’s journey into dentistry began in New Jersey, where she was born and raised with a deep appreciation for both science and community service. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, earning a double major in Biology and Psychology. Her passion for oral health led her to further her education at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Oral Biology.

Dr. Chugh went on to attend Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Following dental school, she completed a General Practice Residency at Monmouth Medical Center, where her clinical excellence and leadership skills earned her the position of Chief Resident. This experience not only refined her technical abilities but also deepened her commitment to comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Over the past several years, Dr. Chugh has played a vital role in strengthening UCDS through her leadership, dedication, and initiative—particularly in successfully securing ARC grants to support the component’s programs and continuing education efforts. Her progression from Secretary to President-Elect is a reflection of her passion for organized dentistry and her commitment to advancing the profession at the local level.

In her practice, Dr. Chugh is known for her compassionate and individualized approach to patient care. She believes in educating her patients on the importance of oral health and takes pride in helping each person find solutions that best fit their lifestyle. Her philosophy centers on creating trust, comfort, and confidence in every patient interaction.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Chugh enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hiking, and cherishes quality time with her husband and 2 daughters— the youngest joined the family just this past August! Her warmth, professionalism, and dedication to both her family and her profession make her a valued leader within the New Jersey Dental Association and a respected member of the dental community at large.
