Helping Members Succeed

The New Jersey Dental Association is the voice of the dental profession and a strong proponent of oral health in the state. Members are part of a vibrant community of dentists encompassing 12 local dental societies as well as the American Dental Association. Members engage in educational programs, have access to dentist-centric relationships and tools to navigate the business of dentistry and their careers, as well as benefit from dedicated advocacy that protects the interests of the profession. The organization is run by member-dentists with the support of a team of professionals at NJDA Headquarters. NJDA members never practice alone!

Call for Interest: Speaker of the House of Delegates (Vacant Position)

The Board of Trustees is seeking applications of interest from the general membership for appointment to the position of Speaker of the House of Delegates.

The Board of Trustees is seeking applications of interest from the general membership for appointment to the position of Speaker of the House of Delegates. This position is currently vacant following the election of former Speaker, Dr. Ed Tirpack, to the office of Secretary on Saturday, May 2 during the NJDA House of Delegates.

Timeline

  • Call for Interest opens: May 7
  • Call for Interest closes: June 22 (11:59 p.m.)
  • Board review and selection target: August 5

Role Summary

The Speaker of the House of Delegates is an officer of the House and is responsible for leading the House’s meetings and supporting its work in accordance with Article III. The Speaker is also a voting member of the Board of Trustees.

Core duties include:

  • Preside at all meetings of the House of Delegates.
  • Determine the order of business for House meetings, subject to the approval of the House of Delegates.
  • Appoint tellers to assist in determining the results of any action taken by vote.
  • Perform such other duties as custom and parliamentary usage require.
  • Rule on questions of procedure; decisions are final unless appealed by a member of the House and overturned by majority vote of delegates present and voting.
  • Participation in Councils and Committees as specified in the Organization and Rules of the Board of Trustees.
  • Availability to attend and preside over scheduled House meetings and related preparation sessions.
  • Serve as a resource during Board meetings to ensure adherence to governance processes and policies.

Who Should Apply

Members who are interested in supporting an effective, fair, and well-run House of Delegates are encouraged to apply. The Board of Trustees will consider all complete applications received by the deadline.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission and work of the Association and its House of Delegates.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, manage agenda flow, and apply parliamentary procedure.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, impartial leadership style.
  • Organizational skills to coordinate with Association officers, committee leaders, and staff support.
  • Capability to interpret and apply the American Institute of Parliamentarians’ Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure (1st and 2nd editions) in meeting settings.
  • Membership in the American Institute of Parliamentarians is encouraged but not required.
