Course Description:

This program is designed to fulfill the NJ Board of Dentistry’s mandate for training in pharmacology and internal medicine.  The appropriate use of analgesics, antibiotics, local anesthetic and anxiolytic agents will be reviewed along with critical aspects of prescription writing and use of the prescription monitoring program (NJPMP).  The course focuses on how we conduct dental treatment safely when our patients present with significant medical histories and take medications that may impact on dental treatment.  The speaker will emphasize the importance of effective communication and informed collaboration with physicians and other members of the health care team.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the process of medical risk stratification and explain its value in dental practice;
  • List five of the most commonly prescribed medications and identify their potential impact on dental treatment;
  • Discuss the appropriate use of antibiotics, local anesthetics and anxiolytics in dentistry.
